IGB-5th Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open Chess Championship 2008 - Day 5

GM Dzumaev Marat >

Indonesia's GM Susanto Megaranto fell to GM Dzumaev Marat of Uzbekistan in Round 8. He will now meet another six pointer Croatian GM Sermek Drazen tomorrow

GM Sermek Drazen >

FM Lim Yee Weng won his match against FM Igor Goldenberg to propel him into the top 10. Tomorow's meeting with China's GM Li Shilong will be a further test of his strength

Earlier in Round 7 GM Susanto Megaranto held ground with a draw over GM Zhang Zhong

Nanjo Ryosuke >

Malaysia's leading player FM Lim Yee Weng scored 1-0 over Zhang Ziyang but two other Malaysia's top table players IM Mas Hafizulhelmi succumbed to a sturdy play by IM Oliver Dimakiling while Mok Tze Meng lost to Nanjo Ryosuke

Malaysia's best female hope Alia Anin Azwa Bakri too was crushed by the heavy black play of the American, Carl Haessler (right). Alia played well in the Royal Selangor Open early this year before capturing the National Woman Master title with relative ease recently.

It was a memorable evening however. There was heavy downpour outside - that led to drips of water, likely from the cold air-conditioner conduits near Board 2 but they wanted to continue on but the other on Board 18 was bad enough that the arbiters had to relocate them elsewhere. To add to the drama were the 20 seconds blackouts, ringing phones (with one being set off but the alarm rang off instead), unauthorised use of laptop, a number of claims on 50-move rules and one claim for repeated move, so as to keep the arbiters busy the whole night.
